Cains & Kuranda
Cains is a beautiful, warm, tropical town that we very much enjoyed walking around in. We spent a full half of a day just sitting by the lagoon - a man-made swimming pool right beside the beach, it even has sand. It allows you to enjoy the water without being concerned for your life with all of the dangerous things in the surf.
Highlight of Cains for me was a trip out in a catamaran to the outer Great Barrier Reef. We did three separate dives in two locations, around the edge of a crater and along a wall. My first saltwater dives went splendidly, and we saw so much, definitely found several different kinds of anemone fish, including Nemo! As well as grouper, anglefish, sweetlips, a ray, and even a massive (3.5 meter) white tip reef shark way off in the distance, and then a much smaller one close up. No turtles unfortunately. I already love diving in saltwater, it's so much easier to control your buoyancy.
One day we took a day trip out to Kuranda, it is a very artsy small town with a koala sanctuary. They raise money for themselves by allowing you to hold a koala, who has been trained to interact with people, for a few minutes. It's SO FUZZY! I did not want to give him back. Nathan held him too and it pooped in his hand. The town is lovely and has lots of nature trails through the rainforest which we enjoyed.
I will leave you with this picture, I have seen a lot of strange looking people on this trip, but I think a gentleman I saw here wins the prize. From bottom to top: bare feet, purple pants, lime green blouse, holding what looked like an incense dispenser from the Catholic church, bright (BRIGHT) red beard, purple turban.
