It is just hot. That is all. That is the end of my blog...
Find shade! It is soo hot.
Kidding! It is hot though.
The last leg of our journey has been great fun! We flew into Izmir but did not hang around, we took the train from the airport to Selcuk, that was not enjoyable. It was hot and stinky. There was a guy with a box of chickens. Chickens smell. So do people. An hour felt like a day, but we made it and we are very happy with our choice to stay in the small town of Selcuk, and not the big port town of Kusadasi.
First day we were in Selcuk we elected just to explore the town. We wandered up to the top of the Alasoluk hill to explore a very nicely restored castle. It had some nice views of the town and farms surrounding. We visited a room, then church, now mosque that was the purported place where John wrote much of his gospel. Then we found just below the castle the Basilica of John which contained the tomb and remains of John the apostle!! We were a bit staggered to be standing in the presance of remains of one who walked with Jesus while in human form. Never mind, one who was Jesus' best friend. We couldn't get over the fact that no one was there. Hundreds of hundreds of people were lined up to visit good old St. Nic, but no one was here for John. Wow! When we were finally able to make our feet move, (because we were out of water, and it was hot) we headed back down to town.

Nathan thought that it was a goat, I thought it was a sabretoothed tiger. What do you think?
No way! That is where John the Apostle is buried!
There is a neat old aqueduct that cuts through town, but neater are the terradactyl nests (also known as stork nests) that dot the top of the aqueduct and the tops of poles. The terradactyls (also known as storks) fly out to the coast and fish during the day, then they come inland to this small town to sleep. It's very cool to see them coming in to land right around sunset time.
Terradactyls are home
Second day we finally took a dolmus (little tiny mini bus used for public transportation) and went in to explore Kusadasi. Kusadasi is a cruise port city, so we were expecting, well, a cruise port city, but it was pretty quiet. It was definitely a big city, just going about their big city business (not catering to tourists). It was a less interesting day, but highlights included:
- having a frozen coffee and a cake from starbucks, in their freezing, but wonderful air conditioning. It cost just as much as a full meal, but was totally worth it.
- finding the "textile/clothing market" and wandering around it, and buying a skirt for the equivalent of $2.50 CAD. This was not a highlight for Nate because he got (physically) pushed around by old ladies. Get between a woman and clothes shopping...
A popular town to get knock offs. I was very temped by a Jimmy Choo bag. Lol. About $15!
Next day we managed to find a company to go scuba diving with. We count this day as a benefit because we got two more dives to count and bottom time experience. The first dive was actually pretty good. We did not see anything noteworthy, except some giant clams and a "sea rabbit" but I am still not sure what that is. Oh, and a big eel swimming away because we aggravated it. Ick. Then we waited a LONG time, surface time was over 3.5 hours sitting on this little boat while they took lots of people for their intro to diving dive. We had to fight for lunch at 2pm, they didn't want to give it to us because we were diving again (after we ate, there was still an hour wait) and I almost had to tell them that I wouldn't dive again so they would give us the included lunch, or I would have been sick. Second dive was obviously timed because it was exactly 30 minutes and our guide never checked in once about our air. There was nothing to see on this dive but weeds and garbage. Very dissapointing. That's why we count it as bottom time. I would not recommend diving in Kusadasi, unless you can find a better company, but we could not find one. Camera only worked to take one picture of the whole dive.
Next day we were running out of things to do so we went and enjoyed the Adaland waterpark. It was fun! Great slides and lots to do, crowded, but not too big of lines. Very hot day, but being in the water most of the day was a great way to stay cooler.
The last day we finally went to tour Ephasis. We had been looking forward to this part, but also avoiding it because it just so darn hot. It was definitely an amazingly restored city. We enjoyed seeing the wonderful facade of the library, the huge theatre, other big gates and buildings, a wonderful mosaic street, and the very amazingly painted and decorated terrace houses! The only thing missing was how it all fits into biblical history. I think you have to take a very specific tour to get that.
We are in Ephasus! Oh, did you want to see pictures of old buildings? Sorry!

I just chose a piece at random, I would love to know what it says, can anyone read it?
As I mentioned we loved staying in Selcuk. Being a small town we found our way around everywhere, and were able to marvel about how much the town changed and boomed for the Saturday market; food, clothes and houseware products. We found our favourite baklavalari and every time we went in we got free pieces. We were invited for tea every night with a guy we met our first day, and on our third night we were invited to be part of a delicious family dinner, on the street outside of his shop. We had interesting conversation and got to learn a little bit more about family and working life in Turkey.
Our new friend, AliAli's store and the street that we had dinner on, I think that might be what they are doing now
One day back in Istanbul, and back home we go! I am happy and sad at the same time!
How about just a couple more pictures?
